Dermaplaning

PRIOR TO YOUR APPOINTMENT, clients are advised of the following:

  • Avoid sun exposureIf your skin is even slightly burnt, an esthetician cannot get to work on any type of skincare treatment. Avoid sun exposure, especially if you are prone to sunburns and redness, in the week or two leading up to your dermaplaning appointment.

  • Stop exfoliatingAt least three to five days before your procedure, stop exfoliating altogether. The dermaplaning process already takes exfoliation to the extreme, so the extra abrasive topicals aren’t necessary. If you continue to use chemical and manual exfoliators at home, you are putting yourself at risk for over-exfoliation and irritation.

  • Get waxing out of the way. Yes, the point of dermaplaning is to remove unwanted hair from the face. However, there is a difference between the short, translucent peach fuzz on your face and the terminal hair from your eyebrows, upper lip, or chin. Waxing removes terminal hairs but also removes layers of skin cells on the face. Since dermaplaning also removes excess skin cells, schedule your waxing appointment at least two weeks before your treatment to avoid any possible irritation afterward.

  • Had a breakout? Time to reschedule. Although one of the fantastic benefits of skincare treatments like dermaplaning is a reduction in the appearance of acne scars, the treatment isn’t appropriate for skin with active acne. If you’ve had a big breakout or even just one small pimple or lesion, it’s time to reschedule your appointment. It might seem disappointing to wait for a new session, but this ensures that the process is safe and produces results for you.

AFTER YOUR APPOINTMENT, clients MUST follow these instructions:

  • After your dermaplaning session, your skin may look slightly pink or red, which is entirely normal. Don't worry; it's just a temporary side effect of the exfoliation process. Remember to avoid touching your face too much, as your skin will be sensitive for a few hours.

  • Stay hydrated. Hydration is key to maintaining that post-dermaplaning glow. Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated from within. Proper hydration not only enhances your skin's texture but also helps to flush out toxins, leaving you with a clear and radiant complexion.

  • MoisturizeAfter dermaplaning, your skin may feel drier than usual, so it's crucial to replenish moisture. Opt for a gentle, hydrating moisturizer to lock in the goodness and keep your skin supple. Remember, well-moisturized skin is less prone to irritation and maintains that youthful radiance.

  • Use sunscreen. Sunscreen is your skin's best friend, especially after a dermaplaning treatment. Your skin will be more sensitive to the sun's harmful UV rays, so applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 is essential. Not only will it protect your skin from sun damage, but it will also prevent hyperpigmentation and premature aging.

  • Avoid harsh products. In the days following your dermaplaning session, opt for gentle skincare products. Avoid using harsh exfoliants or active ingredients like retinol for a few days. Let your skin recover and enjoy the benefits of the dermaplaning treatment before reintroducing strong products into your routine.

  • Don't pick! Your skin will naturally exfoliate after dermaplaning, so there's no need to pick or scrub at it. Picking at your skin can lead to irritation, redness, and even scarring. Embrace the process and let your skin heal on its own.

  • Skip the makeup. As tempting as it may be to show off your newly glowing skin with makeup, it's best to avoid heavy makeup for 24 hours after dermaplaning. Let your skin breathe and recover without any heavy products. If you must wear makeup, opt for mineral makeup or products specifically designed for post-treatment skin.

  • Soothe with a cold compress. If your skin feels a bit sensitive or inflamed after dermaplaning, soothe it with a cold compress. The cold sensation will help reduce redness and calm any irritation. Just remember not to apply ice directly to your skin; wrap it in a soft cloth or use a chilled gel pack.

  • Sleep on a clean pillowcase. To avoid any potential infections, make sure your pillowcases are clean and changed regularly. Sleeping on soft, clean surfaces reduces friction on your skin, allowing it to heal properly and maintain that youthful glow.

  • No saunas or steam rooms. While it's essential to keep your skin clean, avoid exposing it to direct heat for 24 hours after dermaplaning. Saunas, steam rooms, and hot showers can irritate your freshly exfoliated skin. Opt for lukewarm water instead and give your skin the chance to recover.

  • Pat, don't rub when drying your face. After washing your face, pat your skin dry gently with a soft, clean towel. Avoid rubbing or scrubbing your face, as this can cause unnecessary friction and irritation.

  • Follow a skincare routineTo maintain the benefits of dermaplaning, establish a consistent skincare routine. Regular cleansing, moisturizing, and sun protection will keep your skin healthy and glowing. Don't forget to include dermaplaning in your skincare routine at appropriate intervals to continue enjoying its incredible results.
